Want to start drawing your creative fashion ideas or just want to learn how to draw fashion figures? Don’t worry, you will get help here. Drawing figures can be daunting to some people wherever some people can do it without even any classes, just by observing others every day. In my previous article, I talked about getting inspirations from observing real people which will help you become more familiar with human structures and size.
Here in this article. I will show how you can draw model figure with proper measurements. No need to be scared, it is really simple if you know the scaling and practice it regularly. Let’s get started!
FEMALE FIGURE TEMPLATE
Drawing a straight female figure is simple if you follow the given scaling. You will need, 1. Ruler, 2. Pencil, 3. Eraser. You can have few color pens if needed for highlighting.
Depending on the size of your paper, I have used an A4 size paper. Draw one vertical line from top to bottom on the paper, it will be the center line of your figure. On that line, draw 11 parallel lines each having same distance from each other (I have given 2cm gap). Mark the lines from 0-10 starting from above (As shown in the above picture).
From line 0-1, draw the head. So the head size is 2cm (or equal to the gap between the lines). Line 1.5 will be the starting of the shoulders. Shoulder width will be 1.5 times (or little more) of head size. Lines as marked bottom ribs (at 2.75), waist (at 3), high hip (at 3.25) and lower hip (at 4) will help you make the curve of the body where the waist width will be the shortest. It should be around 0.75 times of head size or little more. One you have come down till the hips, draw the legs where knees will start at line 6.5 and ankle will be at line 9.
Arms should be little lower than the hip line and elbows will be little lower than the waist line. Be little free with the curves, the more your hands are loose, the faster you can draw figures. Note that the figures are only drawn to put your cloth designs on them.
Note: The above drawing is not an ideal drawing, it is only used to show the scaling.
DIFFERENT POSTURES
Straight pose is good for starting and front looks of your design. However, you can add more details to your drawing by adding different angels as well. Here in the above picture, I have drawn both front and side angled pose. Side angled pose can be used to show more variations in your design, how it looks not only from front as well as from side and how it wraps around the body. Look at the above drawing and observe the difference between the angels.
The scaling is almost same as the figure template we discussed before but the angels of the parallel lines are changed which we will discuss more.
SIDE ANGEL STRUCTURE
Draw a straight vertical line as the center base of the body. You can mark 11 horizontal lines for scaling as you learned in figure template. However, don’t start drawing the body with the horizontal lines. Since we are drawing figure of from a side bend angel, make the shoulder line as shown in the above picture. The shoulder and hip lines are parallel to each other in front view of the figure. But for other angle, the shoulder line with upper ribs line will be at the opposite direction from the waist and hip lines as shown in the figure. Shoulder and upper ribs line will be parallel as well as waist and hip lines will be parallel.
The angles of the legs will be changed as well. Follow the given pictures if you are not sure how the legs are drawn but the scaling will remain same. As for arms, the bigger the angel between the upper and forearms will be, the longer the overall arm appears. Also, the shorter the angle between upper arm and the body is, the longer the arm looks. Confusing right?
As shown in the figure, the left arm (from our view) is kept on the left hip (which is lower than the right hip), so the length of the arm is longer than the right arm and angle between upper and lower arms (in left arm) is bigger than the left arm. And the angle between upper arm and the body is smaller than in the right arm.
MORE POSTURES
You can draw more postures from different angels like back, sitting posture, forward bend. But you need to master these basic poses before that. Trying different poses and angels is completely up to your progress and improvement. Yo are free to try drawing new angels as well depending on the mood you are going for.
Look at reference pictures online or in magazines and draw them. Once you are handy with basic scaling, it will be very easy for you to learn new postures and angels. There is nothing difficult if you keep practicing. Remember, what you are targeting here, the perfect portraits or the cloth designs. If you are a perfectionist, work hard on your drawing to perfect both.
Conclusion
Getting started on any field is difficult but once get used to the progress you will love the struggle as well (not too much struggle lol) and if provided you love the filed you are getting started into. So I tried to help you a little in case you are struggling alone there. If you find any difficulty, please let me know in below comment section. But I hope it helped you.

I’m certainly no artist but I just had to try your method of drawing a figure and it worked!!! Drawing the lines was perfect for keeping to proportions correct. The angles are also easy to do with the method you’ve shown here. I can’t wait to share with my granddaughters, who love to draw. Thank you for posting!
Just by one look, I can see that you are a great artist! It takes me so long to draw like this, and I am struggling to guide my youngest sister with her arts project that have to be submitted by next week! They have to draw a family drawing and she has been so frustrated because she can’t seem to get it drawn nicely. I have been looking high and low for an in-depth tutorial for her and this is perfect!
I just have one question, do you think it’s possible if you could include a short video tutorial so that people that are a little younger could follow through easier? But as for your article, you have done an excellent job in explaining it for adult beginners like me! Really happy that I finally found a source to be able to teach my sister on! Thank you so much, and keep up the good work!
Thankyou for your comment. I am happy that it helped. As for video tutorials, I will do in near future as I have limited resources currently.
